First prize for Russian violinist Evgenii Sviridov

 

The Russian violinist Evgenii Sviridov won the International Competition Musica Antiqua 2017, focusing on melodic instruments: recorder, baroque flute, baroque oboe, baroque violin, baroque cello & viola da gamba. The second prize was awarded to the Korean recorder player Yeuntae Jung. The jury gave the Korean recorder player HyeonHo Jeon the third prize. The German recorder player Friederike Vollert and the Russian violinist Alfia Bakieva received an honorable mention.


Besides a money prize, the winner of the International Competition Musica Antiqua also gets the opportunity to play recitals at the next MAfestival Brugge, Museum Vleeshuis Antwerpen, Bozar Music Brussel, Monteverdi Festival Cremona, Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, Journées de Musiques Anciennes Vanves, en Mars en Baroque Marseille.


Since 2013 an independent Outhere Music jury awards one of the finalist with a professional recording. Evgenii Sviridov won this prize as well, together with the prize of the audience. The EUBO Development Trust gave a cash prize to the most promising European candidate: Friederike Vollert.


The repertoire of the International Musica Antiqua Competition 2017 for melodic instruments was selected in order to challenge contestants to demonstrate their musical inventiveness, their technical thoroughness, and their mastery of style. In this Telemann-year, the German baroque composer is awarded a central place in the competition program. The finalists also had to perform Une nuit à Monte-Carlo by the Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts (1923 – 1993).


The International Competitions Musica Antiqua belong to the most important and renowned early music competitions. The competition is open to young, highly qualified performers from all over the world, who specialize in the historically informed performance practice.


Over 120 musicians from all over the world took part in the preselections during the 54th edition of MAfestival Brugge. They were judged by a jury composed of members with a successful career in early music: Johan Huys - BE, Jan De Winne - BE, Xenia Löffler - DE, Dorothee Oberlinger - DE, Enrico Onofri - IT, Marco Testori – IT and Mieneke van der Velden – NL.

The repertoire of the International Musica Antiqua Competition 2017 for melody instruments was selected in order to challenge contestants to demonstrate their musical inventiveness, their technical thoroughness, and their mastery of style. Georg Philipp Telemann, who passed away 250 years ago,  is awarded a central place in the competition program. President of the jury Johan Huys elaborates on the program in the regulations.

 

All participants prepare a program that contains the following elements:

 

  • Two fantasias of the participant’s choice by G. Ph. Telemann (original, transposed, or adapted to the participant’s instrument)

and

  • One work (original or not; either solo, with basso continuo, or with concertante harpsichord) by J.S. Bach

and

  • An extra 1 hour selection of music containing minimally 4 complete solo works from the period 1600-1800.

 

Additionally, other works should be performed during the several rounds:

 

Preselection

  • A selection from the Telemann fantasias of the participant’s choice

and

  • A selection from the 1 hour program submitted by the participant

 

Semi-final

  • The work by Bach selected by the participant in his program

and

  • Selection from the 1 hour program submitted by the participant

and

  • Four improvised variations (solo or with basso continuo) – in any style – on a theme which is made available right after the announcement of the results of the preselection


Final

  • Four fragments from Une nuit à Monte-Carlo by the Belgian composer Karel Goeyvaerts (1923 – 1993).
